What persists across generations
The claim is a reframing of what natural selection is actually selecting. Rather than picturing evolution as a competition between whole organisms for survival and reproduction, the gene-centred view treats genes themselves as the entities whose success or failure across generations natural selection tracks, with organisms functioning as the vehicles that carry and replicate them. George C. Williams laid out the theoretical groundwork for this in his 1966 book Adaptation and Natural Selection, arguing that an organism’s body is temporary while the genes within it can, in principle, persist across countless generations, making genes the more natural unit to focus on when explaining why certain traits evolve and others do not.
Organisms as vehicles
Richard Dawkins brought this framework to a wide audience in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, drawing also on W.D. Hamilton’s mathematical work on kin selection to explain how genes favouring apparently self-sacrificing behaviour could nonetheless spread. Dawkins’s central image was of organisms as survival machines built by genes to protect and propagate themselves, with traits like cooperation, aggression or self-sacrifice all explicable in terms of what tends to help copies of a given gene appear more often in the next generation, rather than in terms of what benefits the individual organism or its group as a whole.
A title that invited misreading
The word selfish in the title has caused persistent confusion, and Dawkins later said he regretted it, at one point wishing he had accepted his publisher’s alternative suggestion of The Immortal Gene instead. The term was meant narrowly, to describe how a gene behaves under a Darwinian selection process, favouring its own replication, not to suggest genes have intentions or that the book was arguing people ought to behave selfishly. Dawkins noted that many readers judged the book by its title alone, missing that its actual argument was considerably more specific and, in large part, aimed at explaining cooperative rather than selfish behaviour.
A book largely about cooperation
In fact, a substantial portion of the book is devoted to explaining how altruism and cooperation evolve, using the same gene-level accounting that explains competitive behaviour. Kin selection, in which helping a relative can still favour a gene’s own spread because that relative likely carries copies of the same gene, is a central example, and Dawkins also discussed the so-called greenbeard effect, in which a gene could in principle favour cooperation with any individual sharing an identifiable, related trait, rather than only close kin. The book’s popularisation of these ideas played a significant part in bringing kin selection theory to a broad readership beyond specialist biology.
Gould’s objection
The framework has drawn substantial criticism from within evolutionary biology. Stephen Jay Gould argued that describing genes as the unit of selection confuses book-keeping with causality, since it is an organism’s observable traits, not its genes directly, that interact with the environment and are subject to natural selection; on this view, genes only get selected indirectly, as a consequence of what happens to the traits they help produce. Ernst Mayr went further, describing the gene-centred approach as non-Darwinian in spirit. Other critics have objected to describing genes in language that implies intention or agency, arguing this risks misleading readers about what is actually a purely statistical process.
Enormous influence, unresolved dispute
Despite this unresolved dispute, the book’s influence has been considerable: a 2017 Royal Society poll named The Selfish Gene the most influential science book of all time, and its language and framing, genes as replicators, organisms as vehicles, has become deeply embedded in how evolutionary biology is discussed both professionally and popularly. This is worth understanding because it is simultaneously a case of a scientific metaphor succeeding wildly as communication while remaining genuinely contested as theory, and readers should come away able to state clearly what the gene-centred view actually claims, rather than what its title alone might suggest.
