The claim is a reframing of what natural selection is actually selecting. The term was meant narrowly, to describe how a gene behaves under a Darwinian selection process, favouring its own replication, not to suggest genes have intentions or that the book was arguing people ought to behave selfishly. Dawkins noted that many readers judged the book by its title alone, missing that its actual argument was considerably more specific and, in large part, aimed at explaining cooperative rather than selfish behaviour.

A book largely about cooperation

In fact, a substantial portion of the book is devoted to explaining how altruism and cooperation evolve, using the same gene-level accounting that explains competitive behaviour. Kin selection, in which helping a relative can still favour a gene’s own spread because that relative likely carries copies of the same gene, is a central example, and Dawkins also discussed the so-called greenbeard effect, in which a gene could in principle favour cooperation with any individual sharing an identifiable, related trait, rather than only close kin. The book’s popularisation of these ideas played a significant part in bringing kin selection theory to a broad readership beyond specialist biology.

Gould’s objection

The framework has drawn substantial criticism from within evolutionary biology. Stephen Jay Gould argued that describing genes as the unit of selection confuses book-keeping with causality, since it is an organism’s observable traits, not its genes directly, that interact with the environment and are subject to natural selection; on this view, genes only get selected indirectly, as a consequence of what happens to the traits they help produce. Ernst Mayr went further, describing the gene-centred approach as non-Darwinian in spirit. Other critics have objected to describing genes in language that implies intention or agency, arguing this risks misleading readers about what is actually a purely statistical process.
