Two rival pictures of human origins
The question at stake is where modern humans came from and whether populations around the world evolved into their present form largely in place or arrived there through a relatively recent migration. The multiregional hypothesis, proposed by Milford Wolpoff and colleagues in 1984 and revised in 2003, held that human populations across Africa, Asia and Europe evolved together as a single interconnected species stretching back roughly two million years, through continuous gene flow between regions rather than replacement. The rival recent African origin model held instead that anatomically modern humans evolved in Africa and then dispersed outward, in a comparatively recent and comparatively narrow event, largely displacing whatever earlier human populations they encountered elsewhere.
What mitochondrial DNA showed
The decisive early evidence came from mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited only through the maternal line and accumulates mutations at a roughly steady rate, making it useful for tracing lineages back through time. Studies beginning in the 1980s, associated with researchers including Allan Wilson, Rebecca Cann and Mark Stoneking, found that every non-African mitochondrial lineage traced back to a single branch, haplogroup L3, that itself is comparatively young and rooted in Africa. This pattern, a single non-African-founding lineage rather than several deep, independently evolving regional lineages, is exactly what the recent African origin model predicts and is difficult to reconcile with a strict multiregional account of long, separate regional evolution.
The dispersal out of Africa
Later genetic and archaeological work filled in a broader picture of dispersal. Genetic evidence points to a major expansion of modern humans out of Africa occurring roughly seventy to fifty thousand years ago, likely along a southern coastal route, eventually reaching Australia by around fifty to sixty-five thousand years ago and Europe somewhat later. Autosomal genetic studies added further support, finding greater genetic diversity within African populations than among populations elsewhere, consistent with Eurasian populations representing a subset drawn from a larger, more diverse African source population rather than several independently evolving lineages of comparable antiquity.
Why multiregionalism lost ground
Given this weight of genetic evidence, the multiregional hypothesis in its strong original form lost ground through the 1990s and 2000s. Nuclear DNA studies specifically failed to find evidence of the deep indigenous genetic contribution that the multiregional model would require in regions such as East Asia, and reanalysis of key fossils once cited as showing regional continuity, including specimens compared between Indonesia and Australia, did not hold up under closer scrutiny. By the 2010s the strong multiregional position had become a minority view held by a small number of researchers, concentrated particularly around interpretations of the East Asian fossil record.
Not a clean replacement story
What complicates a simple victory narrative is that the recent African origin model itself had to be revised once genome sequencing of Neanderthal and Denisovan remains became possible. That work showed that populations dispersing out of Africa did interbreed with archaic humans they encountered, with Neanderthal ancestry detectable in most populations outside sub-Saharan Africa and Denisovan ancestry detectable in Australasian populations specifically. Evidence has also emerged of ancient admixture within Africa itself, involving now-extinct archaic lineages, in some West African populations. The result is not a clean single-origin-then-replacement story but a predominantly African origin with limited, real interbreeding along the way.
Where the debate still has edges
This is worth understanding because it is a rare case where a major question about deep human history was substantially resolved by evidence rather than left permanently open, while still leaving genuine texture and disagreement at the edges. The core claim, that living human populations trace their ancestry mainly to a relatively recent expansion out of Africa, is well supported across independent genetic and fossil evidence. But researchers continue to debate details such as earlier dispersals out of Africa that appear to have left no surviving descendants and the precise dating of regional arrivals, which means the honest version of this story is settled in outline but still being filled in at the edges.
