How it was done
Lorenz observed nidifugous birds—especially geese—in natural contexts during the first hours after hatching. He rejected lab-based studies. He used Jakob von Uexküll’s Umwelt concept to interpret how animals’ limited perception shaped instinctive responses. With Nikolaas Tinbergen, he tested fixed action patterns using supernormal stimuli like giant eggs and dummy beaks.
What holds up
Imprinting in nidifugous birds occurs within hours of hatching and enables species recognition and later mating. Fixed action patterns can be triggered by supernormal stimuli more strongly than natural ones. Innate releasing mechanisms—co-developed with Tinbergen—explain how specific stimuli elicit stereotyped behaviours.

Lorenz did not show imprinting occurs in all birds, nor that it governs human attachment. He did not measure neural mechanisms, quantify critical periods, or test cross-species generalisability. It reoriented animal behaviour study from lab reflexes to field-observed instinct, shaping conservation practice, captive breeding protocols, and early-childhood education models—though often beyond what the evidence supports.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if you need to understand how innate behaviour is triggered, not just learned. Lorenz’s work remains foundational for ethology, but it does not explain learning, plasticity, or cognition in non-nidifugous species.
