Golgi claimed he had identified a distinct, internal reticular apparatus present in nerve cells — a novel, non-illusory cellular organelle. He presented it as a real anatomical entity, not an artefact.
How it was done
Camillo Golgi discovered the Golgi apparatus in 1898 using a modified black reaction with osmium dichromate to stain Purkinje cells in a barn owl’s cerebellum. He observed thread-like networks inside the cells under a light microscope. He named the structure ‘apparato reticolare interno’. His assistant Emilio Veratti confirmed the observation before Golgi presented it to the Medical-Surgical Society of Pavia in April 1898 and published it in the Bollettino della Società medico-chirurgica di Pavia.
What holds up
Golgi’s observation of an intracellular reticular network in stained Purkinje cells holds up. His naming of it as ‘apparato reticolare interno’ holds up. His method — osmium dichromate staining of nervous tissue — was reproducible by Veratti and others. The structure itself was later confirmed beyond doubt with electron microscopes.

The discovery did not establish the structure’s function, composition, or universality across cell types. It did not resolve whether the network was continuous, dynamic, or membrane-bound. The claim that it was a unique cellular component was disputed for decades and only accepted after electron microscopy became available.
