A study of twelve children
In February 1998, the surgeon Andrew Wakefield published a paper in The Lancet based on a study of twelve autistic children, proposing that the combined measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine might be linked to autism through a condition he termed autistic enterocolitis. Although the paper itself stopped short of claiming a proven causal connection, Wakefield held a press conference at the time of publication calling for the triple vaccine to be suspended in favour of giving the three vaccines separately, a step critics later characterised as making a public health recommendation by press conference rather than through the ordinary channels of peer-reviewed scientific consensus. The claim, amplified heavily by media coverage, took hold in public perception well beyond what the underlying twelve-case study could reasonably support.
A press conference ahead of the evidence
The investigative journalist Brian Deer subsequently examined the study in detail and found that Wakefield had failed to disclose significant financial conflicts of interest connected to litigation against vaccine manufacturers, and that the patient data underlying the paper’s central claims had been manipulated in ways that misrepresented what had actually happened to the children involved in the study. These findings developed over several years of reporting rather than emerging all at once, and they were substantial enough that The Lancet issued a partial retraction of the paper in 2004, acknowledging problems with how the research had been conducted and reported, well before the fuller reckoning that followed.
Undisclosed money and altered data
The formal institutional response, once it arrived, was unambiguous. Britain’s General Medical Council conducted a 217-day fitness to practise hearing between 2007 and 2010 and ruled on 28 January 2010 that Wakefield had acted dishonestly and irresponsibly, citing conduct including unauthorised invasive procedures performed on children and failure to disclose his conflicts of interest. The Lancet fully retracted the original paper on 2 February 2010, with the journal’s editor stating plainly that it had been deceived, and on 24 May 2010 Wakefield was struck off the UK medical register, the harshest sanction the GMC can impose. In January 2011, the BMJ, under editor Fiona Godlee, published Deer’s complete investigative findings, formally describing the original study as an elaborate fraud rather than merely flawed or mistaken research.
A retraction that took twelve years
What none of these institutional corrections could undo was the public health damage that had already accumulated in the intervening years. UK MMR vaccination rates fell from 92 percent in 1996 to 84 percent by 2002, dropping as low as 61 percent in some parts of London, a decline that tracks closely with the years the original claim circulated unchallenged by any formal retraction. Measles cases in the UK rose from 56 in 1998 to 449 by mid-2006, accompanied by the country’s first measles death since 1992, and mumps notifications reached nearly 5,000 in a single month, January 2005. A 2000 outbreak in Ireland caused three deaths and around 1,500 cases, and by 2008 measles had been declared endemic in the UK for the first time in fourteen years, a direct reversal of decades of successful vaccination coverage.
Struck off and called fraudulent
The broader significance of this case extends well past Wakefield’s individual sanction, since subsequent, much larger studies, including a 2012 Cochrane review examining data on nearly 14.7 million children, found no evidence supporting a link between the MMR vaccine and autism, reinforcing that the original 1998 finding had been not merely small but actively fraudulent rather than an honest, if statistically weak, initial signal that failed to replicate. Wakefield, since being struck off, relocated to the United States, co-founded a research centre there, and has continued promoting vaccine scepticism, including directing a 2016 film on the subject, despite holding no medical licence in either the UK or the US, illustrating how a debunked and formally retracted claim can continue circulating independently of the institutional verdict against it.
