What the work claims

Punctuated equilibrium claims that the degree of gradualism commonly attributed to Darwin is virtually nonexistent in the fossil record, and that stasis dominates the history of most fossil species. When change occurs, it is restricted to rare, geologically rapid branching speciation events.

How it was done

Eldredge and Gould built their 1972 theory on Mayr’s model of geographic speciation, Lerner’s theories of developmental and genetic homeostasis, and their own empirical research. Eldredge had already published in Evolution in 1971, noting that gradual evolution was seldom seen in the fossil record and proposing allopatric speciation as a resolution.
